One of my husband’s favorite t-shirts finally fell apart to the point where I couldn’t repair it. As he came to terms with this sad reality, he asked me, “Can you make it into a pillow?” Of course!… And so the Happy Trees pillow came to be.
Like many people our age, my husband and I watched Bob Ross on PBS regularly and became familiar with his humor and eccentricities. But for my husband it was more than that. He watched every day for years, rushing home after school to catch Bob’s show, The Joy of Painting. He idolized Bob Ross.
As I asked my husband about what he liked about Bob and his show, he sketched one of Bob’s paintings quite accurately, from memory, and recalled famous Bob Ross quotes verbatim, even after all these years. My husband loved how Bob created a beautiful image in just 25 minutes, though he’s never tried painting himself.
I fretted about this pillow for several weeks, wanting it to be perfect, represent Bob’s work accurately, respectfully, and to also represent my husband’s love of Bob’s work. In the end, I took some of Bob’s advice… “Any way you want it to be, that’s just right.”… and went with something simple, framing Bob Ross in all his screen printed glory.
Bob Ross actually had a lot of nuggets of wisdom, like…
• You can do anything you want to do. This is your world.
• Anytime ya learn, ya gain.
• The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe.
• We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy accidents.
• We want happy paintings. Happy paintings. If you want sad things, watch the news.
We could all learn something from him! I know my husband and I have.
When I finished the pillow, I placed it on my husband’s office chair (he works from home). Later when he went to work, I heard a “Whoop!” from his part of the house and wondered what had happened (a big sale perhaps?) Nope. He was delighted to see his pillow and came back to give me a kiss. Heehee!
To close I’ll borrow another of Bob Ross‘ famous quotes…
From all of us here I’d like to wish you happy painting <or sewing or whatever>… and God bless, my friend!
